Our first ‘Musical Shares’ Event

Splice makes it easy for us to pass a project back and forth, right? We decided to test that theory, pass around some beats, and see what happens. A small group of beta users came down to our NYC office to take the plunge.

Here’s how it worked

– Each producer gets 10 minutes to start their track
– When time’s up, each one shares their project to the next producer by adding them as a Splice collaborator on the project
– They have 5 minutes to work on the session, and then pass it to the next collaborator
– On the last round, the creator gets their project back to add the finishing touches!

We called it… Musical Shares.

After less than an hour the group had 10 finished tracks, and each producer worked on 5 songs.

Phiunit, dmillz, Dysrupt, adamcollins, themetabeing, EndlessSpace, robbyt, and matth joined Splice for the collabfest. No one knew what to expect, but all of us couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. The ten projects were as diverse as you could imagine.

Themetabeing’s final track ended up a lot different than it started…

He kicked it off with a foundation of treated vocal samples. Then endlessspace fattened it up with layers of keys and rhythmic embellishments. Matth brought it all together, added finishing touches and the arrangement:

Check out Dysrupt’s ominous, bass-heavy mix here.

Listen to Endlessspace’s wonky final beat here.

After a fun first try at Musical Shares, we look forward to hosting these collaboration round robins more often!
